Talk to a licensed immigration attorney
Every case is different. Before you file, especially if there's a prior visa denial, overstay, criminal record, previous marriage, or big age or income question, we strongly recommend speaking with a licensed U.S. immigration attorney. Many offer low-cost first consultations.

The interview at the US Embassy on Roxas Boulevard is the step most couples worry about. Here is what the Embassy and State Department say to bring and what happens afterward. We can't predict interview questions or outcomes for any case.
Come with every document
- The Embassy's Immigrant Visa Unit runs a "Missing Documents, No Visa Interview" policy. Applicants who aren't fully prepared have to reschedule and collect the missing documents before they can be interviewed. US Embassy Manila
- Immigrant visa (CR-1/IR-1) documents listed by the Embassy include: passport valid at least 60 days beyond the intended travel date; original PSA civil documents (birth, marriage, CENOMAR, Advisory on Marriages, proof any marriage ended); original NBI clearance for ages 16+; foreign police certificates for any country lived or worked in 12+ months; I-864 and financial/tax documents; DS-260 confirmation page; and the appointment letter. Applicants with aliases also need an "NBI AKA". US Embassy Manila
- K-1 documents per the State Department: DS-160 confirmation, passport valid 6+ months beyond the intended stay, birth certificate, divorce/death certificates of prior spouses (both partners), police certificates, medical exam, evidence of financial support (I-134 may be requested), two 2x2 photos, relationship evidence and fee payment. Bring clear photocopies of civil documents and translations too. State Dept K-1
Medical first
The Embassy says you must have attended your medical at St. Luke's Extension Clinic (SLEC) before the interview. On Oct 18, 2026, SLEC's site was under maintenance and said visa medicals are walk-in at Ermita and BGC, Mon–Fri 7:00 AM–2:00 PM. Check slec.ph for current instructions. Embassy
At and after the interview
- For K-1 applicants, the officer verbally summarizes the Rights and Protections pamphlet (read it beforehand), and you'll be given any criminal background information USCIS received about the US petitioner. State Dept K-1
- If the visa is approved, the Embassy delivers it by 2GO courier to your address, or you can pick it up at a 2GO branch. After the interview
- If a case is refused under INA 221(g) for missing PSA documents, the Embassy gives a reverification form with options to request documents from PSA, which then sends them directly to the Embassy. After the interview
- Administrative processing can add time after the interview, depending on the case. State Dept
- K-1: don't open the sealed packet. CBP opens it at the port of entry. CR-1/IR-1: pay the $235 USCIS Immigrant Fee online, ideally after you get the visa and before you travel. State Dept · USCIS Immigrant Fee
- Before departure, the Filipino spouse or fiancé(e) attends the CFO Guidance and Counseling Program. CFO
Practical tips (general)
- Use one folder in the order of the official checklist, with originals and photocopies.
- Make sure names and dates match across the DS-160/DS-260, PSA documents and petition; a missing PSA document is a common reason the Embassy lists for 221(g).
- For contact details and current procedures, use the Embassy's visa pages. Avoid fixers or anyone selling "guaranteed" appointments.
FAQ
- Can I be interviewed if a document is missing?
Under the Embassy's "Missing Documents, No Visa Interview" policy, unprepared immigrant visa applicants must reschedule after collecting all required documents. - How is the visa returned?
By 2GO courier to the applicant's address, or pickup at a 2GO branch, per the Embassy. - Is the St. Luke's medical required before the interview?
Yes. The Embassy says applicants must attend the SLEC medical exam before the interview.
